Pietra dura is an Italian phrase meaning "hard rock." It consists of various types of colored stones set inlay in another stone, typically marble or onyx, and was an evolution of a similar Ancient Roman art called opus sectile. This method of craftsmanship began in Italy during the Renaissance and was perfected in Florence, where by the late 1800s it was often purchased by wealthy tourists as a souvenir.
This large oval piece is made of coral, malachite, and agate inlaid in onyx and it's mounted in a gold oval pin setting, with a hidden bail for versatility. The gold acid tests at above 10 karat, but below 14 karat, and is possibly made of antique 12 karat, which was in use in Britain between 1854 and 1932. Unable to be sure, we're selling it as 10K. The stone is held in place with six large shell-shaped prongs and it fastens with an antique C-clasp.
Note: Some of the inlaid stones from the stems are missing. Otherwise, the pin is in very good condition.

When visible, the Virtual Try-on button (located above the Add to Cart button) allows you to try on rings, bangles, and earrings using just your phone or computer. Other pieces—such as necklaces and brooches—are not eligible.
We do our best to make sure that scale is accurate. If the piece you're trying on has a width or length listed, the try-on experience will be as accurate as possible. Please note that the female models in the stock photos wear a size 7 ring and the gents a size 10.
Jewelry is meant to be worn but it's also an expensive ornament. Here are a few suggestions to extend the life of your jewelry:
- We encourage you to have your jewelry checked and cleaned by us or another trusted jeweler every six months.
- You should remove your rings before swimming or performing any household cleaning, as harsh chemicals can interact with precious metals and permanently damage some stones.
- Generally, we suggest that you do not wear your jewelry to the gym, in the shower, at the pool, or while sleeping.
We do not believe in selling something we cannot service. Should an issue arise, please get in touch. We offer an extensive range of repair services and are here to help!
