A serene face gazes out from a carved moonstone, its features cut in low relief so that light gathers in his cheeks and pools along his eyes. Carved moonstone faces like this one became a Victorian and Edwardian favorite, prized for the way the stone's adularescent glow lent the moon a living, breathing quality. This example is particularly expressive — heavy-lidded eyes, a broad nose, and the faint upward curve of a smile.

The stone sits in a smooth bezel of yellow gold that rises just enough to protect the carving without obscuring it. The real surprise is on the shoulders: hand-engraved foliate scrollwork winds down each side, fine leafy tendrils and curling vines cut with a crispness that suggests a skilled hand rather than a mold. The shank tapers to a slim, comfortable band, and the openwork gallery beneath the stone allows light to pass through from below.
