Old mine cut diamonds were shaped by hand and by eye, before anyone had worked out the math for a modern round brilliant. You can see that in this one. It has a softly squared outline, a high crown and a small table, and when you look straight down there’s a tiny open culet that looks like a dot in the middle. The center weighs 1.00 caratand is held in place with four claws.

Each shoulder steps down in three tiers of single cut diamonds, three stones, then two, then one, and every tier is framed in milgrain. Past the last stone, the platinum is engraved with small flower-and-cross panels and a wheat pattern that runs down the shank.

The engraving is still crisp and the inside of the shank shows light scratches from wear.
