Lover's Eye jewelry was created in the Georgian period (late-1700s) as a way to honor and be close to one's love without having to give away his or her identity. The theory being that only a lover could identify the object of his or her affection solely by the eyes. Most examples of this type feature just one eye, and pieces with two eyes are rare.
Queen Victoria brought the fad back nearly a hundred years later and commissioned lover's eye pieces of her children, friends, and favorites.
This piece, impossible to date but possibly Georgian (it's backed, as was nearly all Georgian jewelry), is made of 14K yellow gold and has a beautifully painted partial portrait of an anonymous woman held under beveled glass.
